Digital mammography uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor, and be transmitted and stored. The digital images can be easily stored and copied without any loss of information; thus eliminating the dependence of one set of “original films.” By having the images on a computer the radiologist is capable of manipulating the image with adjustments on the brightness and the contrast, with added capability to zoom in on areas of interest.
Because the final images are electronic, the images can be generated within a matter of seconds without waiting for lengthy film processing. There is less time spent waiting and a shorter exam time.
As an added benefit to our mammography patients, Viewmont Medical Services is equipped with a Computer Aided Detection ImageChecker System. This system assists our radiologists by digitizing and analyzing mammograms for suspicious regions that may be indicative of cancer. The radiologist will review the entire mammogram first and then activates the ImageChecker monitor to see if any areas have been highlighted for additional review. If an image is marked, the radiologist goes back to the original mammogram to review this image in more detail.
To make your mammogram exam as comfortable as possible we have the Woman’s Touch MammoPad available. The MammoPad is a soft cushion that the technologist places on the mammography machine. It provides a softer, warmer, more comfortable mammogram and has been approved by the FDA. It is transparent and does not interfere with the image quality. Currently insurance companies do not cover this product. We offer it to our patients at a small nominal fee.
